Identifying Indiana Fossils
Overview: This 20 minute eLearning module includes a comprehensive educator guide and covers Indiana 3rd Grade Science Standard 3.ESS.4:
Determine how fossils are formed, discovered, layered over time, and used to provide evidence of the organisms and environments in which they lived long ago.
Goal: The goal is to help students identify fossils commonly found in Indiana so they can better understand the environment of the area millions of years ago. They will also be working on observation and note-taking skills throughout the module.
Tools Used: Storyline 360, Google StreetView, Meshroom, Blender, Canva
Educators: There is an educator guide to go along with this to help you see what your students are learning. Click the link below to request it via email.
Learners can fill in their individual field guide. They will use this as a resource along the way to take notes about the fossils they find.
Learners will be immersed in a 360 degree image of a creek to search for and find fossils. The count in the top right corner helps students keep track of how many fossils they have found.
Once they find a fossil, learners can "pick it up" and explore all angles of the fossil using the dial. This 3D model will help students study and identify characteristics of each fossil.
After filling out the field guide, students can review their responses and see their "sketched" versions of the fossils they find. They will use their completed guide as a resource for the knowledge checks.
